Alpha Upsilon Chapter

The Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Theta Pi was established at Penn State College on October 4th, 1888.  At the time there had been an anti-fraternity law at Penn State, but it was abrogated in January 1888.  Ten men adopted the ways and traditions of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity and became the first members of the Alpha Upsilon Chapter.  Among these men was Brother Howard Walton Mitchell, and Brother Gilbert Addams Beaver.

The First Chapter House

The first chapter house was built in 1890.  It was located on College Avenue across from Old Main.  Unfortunately it was destroyed by fire in 1895.

The Second Chapter House

In 1895 the second house was built on the current location of the Deike Building, across from the current chapter house.  This Victorian style mansion was demolished only 34 years after its construction to make way for school buildings and the current chapter house.  Many valuables were saved from the demolition and are kept in the current house.  Some of these items are the Alpha Upsilon Chapter Charter, the newspaper tables, Wooglin's Chair and even the Beaver Window.

The Current Chapter House

In 1929 the present chapter house was built. The Honorable Judge Brother Howard Walton Mitchell was largely responsible for the financing of the construction.  According to legend this was accomplished by selling sandwiches on campus.  This benevolent action earned him the nickname " The Hoagie Man."
