National History: SLG
On October 22, 1989, a group of women gathered at the Chicano Native American Culture Center to form an organization of Latina/Hispanic women at the University of Iowa. Their goal was to form a group that would provide social and academic support to Latinas/Hispanic and women of all cultures.

Sigma Lambda Gamma Today
Today Sigma Lambda Gamma is known as a prestigious sorority nation wide. This is all thanks to the founding mothers and our Executive Director, Mary Peterson and Esther Materon-Arum. Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority has Chapters from New York to Texas, and Florida to California. In total, Sigma Lambda Gamma has 94 chapters and 22 colonies, making it the Largest Latina-Oriented sorority in the nation and the fastest growing sorority in the nation. Our members have recognized the need for togetherness and support among women of all cultures at their universities and colleges and are dedicated to the overall success of women in the world.
Phi Alpha Chapter History: SLG - FA
On February 19, 1999 the interested ladies at Penn State officially became a recognized colony. After fullfilling all requirements, and proving to be the strong women Sigma Lambda Gamma needed, one year later in 2000 the Phenomenal Phi Alpha Chapter became officially recognized as a Sigma Lambda Gamma Chapter.

Today the Phi Alpha chapter is the largest multicultural sorority at Penn State University. We have constructed a solid foundation for the years to come.

Across The Land
- In the first National Latino Step Show hosted by Latinos Step the Iota Alpha Chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma placed 1st among 9 sororities in 2002 & 3rd place in the 2003 competition.
- We are known to be the largest & fastest growing Latina Sorority with a multicultural membership with: 94 Chapters and 22 Colonies [which are developing chapters] and 18 Alumnae Associations.
- Author Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez' main character, Alexis, in the book "Playing with Boys" was a Gamma
- The Mu Beta chapter at Westpoint Military Academy is the first multicultural sorority to ever form at this school
Penn State Pride
- Most community service hours for the 2004 academic year with 90 hours among the Multicultural Greek Council 2 fraternities and 4 Sororities
- Phi Alpha chapter of Sigma Lambda Gamma was the first multicultural sorority to have a Homecoming Float in Penn State history
- Penn State Gammas win 2nd place in the IUP Stepshow
- Penn State Gammas won the Festival Del Sol 2005 Stroll Competition at the University of South Florida
