Recruitment News
Message from the Vice President for Membership I was your typical story. My family bled Blue & White, and coming to Penn State was basically beyond my control. My sister was part of the Penn State Greek system, and throughout my entire life, I had always been following in her footsteps. I was one of those high school kids who walked around talking about how I knew I would join a sorority, merely because my sister was in one. I came to Penn State, went through recruitment during my first semester, and joined the same chapter that my sister was a member of. I assumed that most Greeks I was soon going to meet would have similar stories to my own. I thought that Greeks would all be the same. I thought this was the typical story. The moment I joined the Penn State Greek community, I realized one important thing that I do not take for granted even today: Penn State Greeks are not typical. Our Greek community is comprised of thousands of hard-working, dedicated students, who are constantly striving to do better and make their surrounding community a better one. The members of our Greek community are diverse. They come from all different kinds of places and backgrounds; each and every person brings something to our community that is unique and irreplaceable. Penn State Greeks are some of the brightest and most motivated students on Penn State’s campus. Members of the Greek community are academically-driven, and are consistently succeeding among some of the smartest students in the country. Penn State Greeks are also involved throughout our campus – you can find Greeks running Penn State’s IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon (THON), leading our campus in widespread community service projects, permeating PennState pride as Lion Ambassadors, serving our student body as members of student government, and so much more. It is because of members of the Greek community that I took advantage of every opportunity Penn State provides for its students; I was inspired by their commitment and have become an active leader across campus. Greek life is constantly opening new doors for its members, and if for nothing else, I would encourage every single PennState student to join our Greek community simply because of the wonderful opportunities for leadership it has to offer. But our Greek community cannot go on forever merely hoping that our members will remain strong and dedicated PennState students. You are the future of our successful community. You hold the power to take Greek life to new heights. By becoming a part of our Greek community, you will be able to make your time at Penn State unforgettable. You can change your typical story. Best wishes, Emily Cohen
