Letter from the President
Dear Fellow Panhellenic Women, Family, Friends,
Advisors, Faculty, and Visitors:
Welcome to Penn State’s Panhellenic Council's website. My name is Mairys Joaquin and I have the honor of serving as the 2009
President for the Panhellenic Council. Thank you so much for taking the time to learn more about a group that is blessed with thousands of motivated, intelligent and beautiful women who continue to positively impact the Penn State Community.
The Panhellenic Council is comprised of 23 chapters of women-— 20 National Panhellenic Conference sororities and 3 associate chapters-- whose dedication and hard-work have helped improve and impact life at Penn State University. Each chapter embodies its own unique characteristics but, as a whole, we all share the bond of being Greek women who strive for excellence and success.
From community service and philanthropic efforts to campus-wide involvement and achievements, Panhellenic women have continuously made a difference at the University. Greek women’s efforts continue to impact various causes including breast cancer research, sight loss and, most notably, pediatric cancer through the IFC/Panhellenic Penn State Dance Marathon (THON). THON has helped raise millions of dollars for this cause and is one that is close to many of our hearts.
You may be a prospective member who is not sure if you want to affiliate with a sorority. Maybe you are a visitor who simply wants to know what all this Greek “fuss” is about. To you I will define what it is to be a Greek woman at Penn State: to be Greek is an honor and a responsibility. It is to join into a sisterhood and establish life-long friendships that truly outrun the tracks of time. To be Greek is to be a positive impact to all of those surrounding you. To be Greek is to strive to become better, faster and stronger. To be Greek is to be great.
Becoming a Greek woman was one of the best decisions I have ever made in my life. It allowed me to carve my niche at this university while getting to meet some of the most amazing people I have ever met in my life. Being Greek helped me learn more about my school, my community, and above all else, myself.
If you want to cause a positive impact in your community while building lasting relationships and making the best memories of your life, I urge you to take the leap of faith and join Sorority Recruitment. Let go of your preconceived notions or stereotypes and become an integral part of one of the largest Greek systems in the world. You too can become a stronger leader, more conscious citizen and a better person. It’s one decision that, in the end, is worth it.
With Love,
Mairys Joaquin
Panhellenic President, 2009
