Sigma Kappa’s Ice Follies:
Sigma Kappa holds Ice Follies every year. It is a broomball
tourtament where teams of six play onthe ice with sneakers instead
of skates and brooms instead of hockey sticks. This event, held
every spring, helps bring together members of the Penn State
community and raise money for our various philanthropies. In
2008, Sigma Kappa was able to raise over $1500! This year, in
March 2009, Sigma Kappa raised over $2000!
Gerontology Studies:
Sigma Kappa-the first Greek-letter organization to recognize the
need for service to the elderly population. Sigma Kappa approved
this philanthropy in 1918. The Penn State chapter makes a
point to help elderly in the Centre County Area through visits or
activities throughout the year.
Alzheimer’s Disease:
In 1984 Sigma Kappa responded to an increasingly critical
problem facing older Americans by adding Alzherimer's Disease
research and education to its philanthropic activites. Research
grants are made each year to universities and other institutions
actively ingaged in the fight against Alzheimer's Disease.
Through its partnership with the National Alzheimer's
Association, Sigma Kappa's throughout the country, as well as the
Sigma Kappa Foundation, raise money for research and to increase
awareness regarding the tragedy of this affliction. The Penn State
Chapter supports the philanthropy through our very own "Sigma
Kappa Sliders", which is an all day slip n' slide event. With help
from the Penn State Greek Community we are able to work
together to find a cure for this disease.
Maine Seacoast Mission:
Since 1918, Sigma Kappa has paid homage to its Maine roots by
supporting the activites of the Maine Seacost Society. The Maine
Seacoast Missionary Society delievers critical services to people in
need whilie striving to redress the roat causes of those needs. With
the help of the 75-foot mission vessel and Sunbeam V, direct
programs and services include church and pastoral work,
assisstance to those in sickness or poverty, financial aid, food banks,
recycled clothign shops, crisis intervention, youth programs, and
ministries in the field. The society serves the islands from midcoast
to downeast Maine, as well as mainland Hancock and Washington
Counties. The Theta Psi chapter collects toiletries and accessories
every fall that are shipped to the Maine Seacoast
Mission Society for distribution to the families served by the
organization.
