Sorority life for me did not turn out how I expected but in fact, it exceeded my expectations. I joined because a lot of older girls I knew joined and told me how fun it was. Together all my friends and I decided to go through recruitment, and naturally we all ended up in different places. I expected us to lose our friendships but that was the first thing I was wrong about. We all remained friends and all support each other’s sorority.
After accepting my bid and sitting in the sorority suite with my pledge class I expected that these girls would become my friends. But actually they have become way more than that. I always thought it was corny that sorority members called each other “sisters” but I truly understand why now.
After my first few social events I expected to forget everyone’s name but I didn’t realize that I would actually become friends with so many other sorority women and fraternity men. Joining Greek life really opens up the opportunity to meet many people and make a large campus feel rather small.
After being selected as the new philanthropy chair as a second semester freshman I expected that this position would be my only position throughout my membership. My expectations were exceeded once more when I was elected Chapter president the following semester.
I expected my term as president to be rewarding, but it was life changing. Serving as chapter president is when I truly realized the benefits of joining a sorority. I was able to learn so much about my peers and understand how everyone has their own unique personalities. I was faced with many real-life situations and grew tremendously as I conquered each issue. Overall, joining my sorority has changed my life for the better. It was matured me and a person and nurtured me into a leader.
You may be expecting to make great friends, have a fun social life, and hold some positions in your sorority, but it is really so much more than that, and you’ll just have to join to find out what your sorority can do for you!
