Gamma Phi Beta

Major: Energy, Business, Finance
Class: 2011

I’m from New Jersey, and being the first in my family to go away to college, I was a little anxious about attending a school as large as Penn State.  During my first semester, I never thought about joining a sorority. Greek Life was something I was unfamiliar with.  I hung around with a couple of my friends from high school who eventually decided to join a sorority in the spring.  Through them I not only heard about all the fun they were having during Big/Little Week and Greek Week, but I got to meet all the new friends they made.  Still unsure about joining, I waited until the fall to go through formal recruitment.  It was one of the best decisions I’ve made in my college career.  I ended up joining a different sorority than my high school friends. It was good because it allowed me branch out on my own and at the same time meet even more people. It was amazing how close I grew to my sorority sisters in such a short amount of time.  Experiencing Homecoming and Greek Sing for the first time in the fall was a great way for everyone to get to know each other better.  Being part of a sorority has allowed me to develop leadership skills.  Early on, I held positions within my chapter in areas I was interested in, such as community service, recruitment, and new member education.  I came to find that my sorority is full of women with different personalities and interests, but what we share are common values and a commitment to one another.  In addition, the longer I am part of the Greek Community, the more I realize that it is not just the individual chapters that are bonded together, but Panhellenic women as a whole.  I know that when I graduate this coming May, I will be taking with me memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.
